I often wander around the National Trust properties here in North Yorkshire to look for details and absorb a little inspiration from the hand printed wallpapers, worn wooden flooring and paintings such as these. These are the style of paintings that capture a relaxed side of life for its time. Produced in a watercolour that is the heavier side f application where water has been used to just mix the paint to a paint and any blending tends to be done directly on the paper to produce a technique that gives the impression of an oil in places. I also adore how finely the birds in the sky have been painted in such fine strokes. The trees and sky are beautifully executed.
This painting has no title but I have named it Sunday on the Lake, as it feels just that.
No signature or date but appears to be mid to late 1800's.
It measures approx 45cm x 35cm
The frame shows wear and a few chips to the moulded plaster work. Original chain is attached to the back so ready to hang.
