Possibly painted onto porcelain or opal glass.  Enamel was used from around 1630 to replace watercolour.  This \u003cspan\u003enew style of miniature was immediately attractive to royalty and courtiers for their rich colour and durability and continued as choice of material through future centuries. Unlike those painted in watercolour, which were easily damaged by fading and damp.
