Old Maurice Utrillo Print - "Montmartre"

£38.00

"Maurice Utrillo; (26 December 1883 – 5 November 1955), was a French painter of the School of Paris who specialized in cityscapes. Born in the Montmartre quarter of Paris, France, Utrillo is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who were born there".

"Early 20th-century Paris was the chaotic incubator of modern art. Born into this tumult in 1883 as the fatherless son of a former circus acrobat, Maurice Utrillo lived the definition of "La Vie Boheme," a Bohemian life. In his youth, Utrillo's mother encouraged him to pursue art as an antidote to his alcoholism; advice he took enthusiastically. Maurice Utrillo's paintings of cities and landscapes highlight his self-taught skill in Post-Impressionism and Cubism techniques.  Maurice Utrillo paintings, prints, and lithographs number in the thousands, but his most popular come from his "white period," named for depictions of plaster walls lining bleached pathways. The value of Maurice Utrillo's prints has only increased since his death in 1955".

I acquired this fabulous print last week on my travels along with three more from this collection (which are currently for sale too) and in some way they are the main inspiration to this collection.  The Lithograph print is very well produced and holds the texture of the brushmarks to Utrillos' paintings well.  A wonderful feel of French city/townscapes in the sunshine.  You may choose to purchase the collection (of 4) or just select one to evoke memories, or daydreams of a place once visited or a place you wish to travel to one day.

This print is titled Montmartre, in Paris, it is in its original frame but not glazed, the frame carries some marks from its journey.  There is a hanger on the reverse.  Printed around the mid to late 40's.

The frame measures 39cm x 32cm.

Original painting was produced 1938-40
