Old Hand Embroidered Sampler Dated 1852

A beautiful old hand embroidered sampler that has been very well preserved behind glass for years. Unfortunately the frame and glass was in a damaged condition but the sampler itself is wonderfully preserved.

It is dated 1852 and by Hannah Collins.

It travels through the alphabet in uppercase style and repeated three times, followed by a lower case alphabet.  There is a verse that writes

"This world all a fleeting show

In man's illusion given

The smiles of joy the tears of woe

Deceitful shine deceitful flow

There's nothing true but heaven

And falsely light so glory's plume

As fading hues of even

And love and hope and beauty's bloom

Are blossoms gathered from the tomb

There's nothing bright but heaven

Poor wanderers of a stormy day

From wave to wave were driven

And fancy's flash and reason's ray

Serve but to light the troubled way

There's nothing calm but heaven".

He died the year that the sampler was made.
