A very special find indeed.

A beautiful old miniature painting, painted in enamel, sat within the original pressed decorative frame. Possibly painted onto porcelain or opal glass. Enamel was used from around 1630 to replace watercolour. This new style of miniature was immediately attractive to royalty and courtiers for their rich colour and durability and continued as choice of material through future centuries. Unlike those painted in watercolour, which were easily damaged by fading and damp. The glass of enamel retained its colour and remained sturdy in structure.

This painting has been signed Fuger, and research has lead me to Friedrich Heinrich Fuger, his signature sits to the right side of the painting. He was one the most famous and influential court portrait painters in Vienna, often referred to as the "The King of Miniaturists".

Good condition for age.

Late 1700's/early 1800's.

I have taken lots of photographs as a visual description.

The original velvet backing is still to the reverse too.

As you can see from the photographs there are fragments inside the glass.
